Hey there teacher friend, I’ve noticed something more and more with each new class I teach… So many children are reluctant to write. They have plenty to say. They can talk about a picture, tell you a story and come up with wonderful ideas - but the minute you ask them to put pencil to paper, suddenly it’s: “I don’t know what to write.” I really wanted to take some of that pressure away. So I started using 5-minute Quick Writes with my students - and I’m already seeing such a difference. They’re getting started faster, writing for longer and becoming much more confident about simply having a go. My goal isn’t perfect writing. It’s just to get them writing. ✏️ Because I really believe writing is like a muscle - the more often children use it, the stronger and more confident they become. I’ve now created three ways to get started: ✨ Descriptive Writing Quick Writes 👉 Descriptive Writing Picture Prompts | Quick Writes | Writing Worksheets & Slides ✨ Recount Writing Quick Writes 👉 Recount Writing Prompts | Quick Writes | Digital Slides & Writing Booklet ✨ Quick Write Growing Bundle 👉 Picture Writing Prompts | 1st 2nd Grade Writing Worksheets | Growing Bundle Each set follows the same simple routine: Look → Talk → Write → Check …and the actual writing part is just five minutes. I’ve written more about why I created these resources, how I’m using them in my own classroom and what I’m already noticing with my students over on the blog. 👉READ: 5-Minute Writing Prompts That Help Reluctant Writers Build Confidence
If you have children who freeze as soon as they hear the words “time to write”, this might be exactly the little routine they need. Sometimes we don’t need to ask them to write more. We just need to help them start. 💛 Happy teaching, |
